I'm pleased to confirm that St Mary's Street is now open in both directions, as work continues on the major scheme to reconstruct the road after a survey revealed it was at risk of collapsing. The works will continue for up to another three weeks at most, during which it will continue to be at a reduced capacity (i.e. one lane open in each direction). However, it's great to be able to report that vehicles can now travel north over the Town Bridge, which will ease some of the pressure on our road network and help residents in going about their day-to-day business.

New figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed the extent of the continuing fall in unemployment in Bedford Borough. The number of people claiming Job Seeker's allowance has fallen by 46% - more than 2,000 people - since February last year. Meanwhile, the age group with the highest proportion of claimants, 18 -24 year-olds, saw a particularly high month-to-month fall between September and October, with the numbers dropping by 16%. This is considerably faster than the regional reduction.
This year's community tree planting will take place across five sites. Bedford Borough Council is asking people to volunteer and help plant over 8500 trees during January and February.
