Mayor Dave Hodgson has announced that Bedford Borough Council will be introducing a new weekly food waste collection service. Residents will be able to dispose of food waste sustainably into a caddy bin provided by the Council. The service will be introduced during the 2024/25 financial year.
Last week Mayor Dave Hodgson welcomed Sir Ed Davey MP to Stewartby where they visited EVIOS, a start-up business that manufactures electric vehicle charging points. The Liberal Democrat Leader also praised Mayor Dave for his work bringing new jobs to the Borough and supporting sustainable businesses.
At a meeting of the Executive, Finance Portfolio Holder Councillor Michael Headley outlined the strategies put in place to deal with the financial challenges the Council faces caused by years of Conservative government cuts and huge inflationary pressure. The measures have offset the additional forecast costs from children's social care placements and temporary accommodation, whilst protecting vital frontline services as the Council has done every year since 2009.
New figures have revealed the number of people sleeping rough is rising substantially in surrounding areas but in Bedford Borough the figure has remained at two since 2021 - one of the lowest numbers in the region. Central Bedfordshire, Luton, Milton Keynes, North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire all recorded rises in rough sleeping numbers. Bedford Borough Council has been praised for its Homelessness Strategy that has just been extended for another year.
