Launch of New Canoe Pass and Slalom Facility - Boost for Sporting Activity on the River

We are all rightly proud of the beautiful River Great Ouse in Bedford, but there is one way in particular in which we can make even more of it for the benefit of local residents and visitors. I'm referring to increasing opportunities for more people to actually get on the river themselves and enjoy it for sports and leisure activities. Last year, the Council joined up with the Environment Agency to publish a 'Waterspace Strategy' for Bedford, which focused on how we could really make the most of our fantastic river for the community as a whole. In addition to seeking to introduce more opportunities for leisure boating such as punting or rowing boats, it also looked at improving sporting access to the river, and with that in mind I was delighted to attend the opening of the new Duckmill Weir Canoe Pass and Slalom facility last weekend.

Pints in the Parishes in Harrold Tonight!

The first 'Pints in the Parishes' event of 2012 is taking place tonight, at The Oakley Arms in Harrold. These s essions are intended to provide an opportunity for me to hear directly from anyone who wants to discuss the issues important to them in an informal, local environment. My thanks to Harrold Parish Council for proposing that I visit the village for a Pints in the Parishes session and to the Oakley Arms for being kind enough to have me! If you would like to see me at one of these events and are wondering when I will be coming to a village pub near you, a full list of all 'Pints in the Parishes' dates and venues can be found by clicking on 'Pints in the Parishes' in the list on the left hand side of the the home page here on www.mayordave.org.uk

Survey Reveals St Mary's Street is in Danger of Collapse – 8 Weeks of Works Ahead

As you may have seen or heard through local media, a survey has revealed that St Mary's street in the centre of Bedford is in danger of collapse. Astonishingly, the road was only resurfaced fewer than ten years ago by the former County Council. Sadly, however, as has been the case in areas across the Council, we are clearing up the former County Council's mess, after they didn't tackle drainage problems and simply put tarmac over the existing road surface. As the local business owners along the street, which runs off the Town Bridge to the south (from the Park Inn hotel), have made clear to me, the build up of surface water on the road causes them real problems. So, we've been aware of the lack of drainage, but it is only now a full survey has been done that the extent of the damage to the road caused by this has been revealed. It has shown that the road is in danger of 'failure' (i.e. collapse) at some point, and therefore urgent works must be undertaken. And this time we'll do a thorough job which lasts.
